Unlike some other, weaker events where participants are handed an assignment just because they signed up, Auctions, As Threatened is different! This event is all auctions, all the time, and instead of using something as useless as money we're betting with wordcount (or wordcount equivalent, for some mediums).

To participate in the event you can:

  • Request gifts in 1-20 fandoms!
  • Join us on Discord to bid on the recipient(s) you'd like to create for!
  • Win big!! Or maybe lose everything!!!

Posting a gift without winning an auction for your recipient is illegal, though we haven't found any way to stop it from happening again and again.

Click here for a short FAQ!

FAQ

Do I need to request if I want to bid? Do I need to bid if I want to request?

No, submitting requests isn't directly linked to assignments in this event; you can do either or both and participants who only want to request or only want to create are very welcome!

If you want to be guaranteed a gift then you will need to make a 500+ word (or wordcount equivalent) gift (plus meet some other requirements) but this event will benefit from having more requesters than bidders, so feel free to treat it like a prompt meme.

How many requests can I make?

You can make up to 20 requests, across 1-20 fandoms, repeating fandoms if you'd like. The first 10 requests you make should go into the Main Collection, and any beyond that should go into the Request Overflow Collection.

What can I do to ensure someone bids on me?

Beyond just diversifying your request, you could also try telling friends or fandom groups about the event! (Please only share our event in comms/Discord servers/etc that welcome event advertisements, and please note that this is an 18+ event.)

Wait so are treats (gifts with no assignment attached) allowed or not? Can I create stuff without bidding?

Treats are allowed and even encouraged! They're illegal in a silly lore way because we like joking around, but they're definitely not against the rules.

Will requests have DNWs? Can I write a Dear Creator letter?

Yes and yes! You should treat requests for AAT like they're a normal exchange sign up...except there are no offers.

Is there an anonymous period? Do I need to be secretive about what I'm creating?

No and no. Auctions will be public and the winners will be obvious, plus we don't have an anon period. You can be secretive about what you're making if you want, but you don't have to be.

When were auctions threatened? What is the history of this event?

In 2020, the flash exchange We Die Like Fen ran a round where there were no matching criteria and this auction format had to be spontaneously invented. It was a lot of fun (and people made a lot of words!) but it was also a ton of work. It inspired [community profile] ficinabox, but we all vowed never to run auctions again......except fence kept being tempted to revisit the idea with better planning and technology. They'd muse on it and ponder and make little plans and everyone around them (especially the people who knew they'd be roped into helping run this thing) did feel pretty threatened, but ultimately safe. After all, what could justify doing that much work again?

...well, the greatest motivator in the world, of course: friendship! [archiveofourown.org profile] tuesday has said that the WDLF auctions were their favorite over and over for years, while getting more and more busy. Now tuesday has free time again for fandom things, and the rest of you are going to profit—we're going to have auctions, as threatened, because there's no greater gift we could give to tuesday.

Event Overview

Nominations

Participants will submit (nominate!) fandom, relationship, character, and freeform tags to the tagset. Participants will also have the opportunity to request additional mediums.

Requesting

Participants will submit requests to the AO3 collections, using tags from the tagset.

Auctions

Each requester will be put up for auction on Discord over the course of a week — auctions are done by username, not by individual request. Creators will bid via wordcount (or equivalent) using a bot. Auctions will last most of a day. Bids and winners will be public. Minimum and maximum bids are TBD.

Creation Period

The collection will open as soon as auctions start. Creators are not required to be anonymous and can directly ask their recipient(s) questions.

Penny Auctions

A second round of auctions in which the minimum bid is 1 word. These auctions will be a mixture of defaults, partial defaults, and second-chance auctions for anyone who wasn't bid on in the first round of auctions.

Pinch Hits

Conventional pinch hits will be posted for anyone who meet the following requirements: 1) requested at least 3 fandoms, 2) had at least one bid on their requests, 3) turned in gift(s) of at least 500 words total (or equivalent), and 4) does not have gift(s) totalling 500 words. Pinch hits will be 500 words (or equivalent) minimum.

Reveals

Works and creators will reveal at the same time! We will not reveal if all pinch hits have not been filled.

We've scheduled all 144 auctions! Here are some notes:

Auction info

Auctions will start at 3PM EDT on Thursday, May 15th. The last auction will end at 9PM EDT on Sunday, May 25th.

Auctions last 24 hours.

We've staggered auction start times by at least 15 minutes so that auctionbot won't get too overwhelmed. Auction times are all between 3pm and 9pm EDT.

Other notes

  • We've chosen to turn off the ability to make a copy of the auction schedule spreadsheet because we don't want people to have incorrect personal copies floating around in the event that we need to reschedule things (for example, if auctionbot breaks)
  • auctionbot will post a list of upcoming auctions at 10pm EDT and 10am EDT. These upcoming auctions will use that special discord embed that displays in each person's local time.
  • auctionbot also has a /remind function to help you keep track of auctions that are important to you.
  • Full instructions for using auctionbot can be found in #participant-bot-guide (<- this channel might not be visible yet when you go to look for it if auctionbot isn't yet in the server)

Full Auction Schedule

Full Schedule Spreadsheet

This is a view-only google sheet that has tabs for: Schedule By Lot (Username), Schedule By Time, and schedules for each day.

(Simple HTML Page) Schedule by Lot

This is a simple HTML page generated from the spreadsheet that should be easier to load than the spreadsheet, which might be preferable for people on mobile or who have slow/old devices. It shows auctions organized by username.

Please check the email associated with your AO3 account(s) as we've now sent emails to everyone who had request problems! In some cases we have said we will change things about your request in this or that way if you don't get back to us, so we would really like to hear from you.

Hooray, we reached the end of requesting! Now the mods will look over all the requests for problems and plan the auction schedules.

  • Please keep an eye on the email associated with your AO3 account; this is where we will contact you if there is a problem with your requests.
  • We'll have the auctions scheduled ASAP, but it might take a few days! We'll post a full schedule as soon as we have one so that you can make auction plans.
  • Did you make a big oops on your requests that you think should really be fixed before you go to auction, like forgetting the DNWs on our of your requests or accidentally asking for your NOTP? Email us or open a ticket on the Discord before auctions start and we'll sort you out!

Nominations are closed! You have roughly 24 hours (countdown here) to submit your requests. Then we'll schedule auctions!

Outstanding nominations

  • Creator's Choice of Recipient's Requested Fandoms (tags: CCoRRF Character & CCoRRF Characher (CCoRRF), CCoRRF Character/CCoRRF Character (CCoRRF), Solo: CCoRRF Character (CCoRRF)) — We're sorry, nominator, but we've determined that we can't accept these tags because we don't know how to make it clear what they mean and don't mean. For example, we think that what you're asking for is for people to cross over your requested fandoms, but we think that some people who'd request this would want it to be fine to mix and max characters from the same fandom and others wouldn't.

Instead of a fandom tag, please add something in your AO3 sign up inviting people to mix and match characters in whatever way you prefer. We'll check optional details for that kind of note when we're checking posted works!
  • Devil's in the Defaults - yelp (tags: Rowan & Modette, The Devil & Rowan) — Nominator, we couldn't find where you might have posted the required link to a permissions post. If you can provide that, we will accept these nominations. If not, we're willing to enter replacement tags (one fandom and two relationship slot tags in that fandom) instead.

Posting rules update

One thing we worry about when letting fun new mediums into the event is whether or not posted gifts will comply with the AO3 Terms of Service — so we've made the following edit to the Posting section of the rules:

Mediums not hosted on AO3: Make sure you have some sort of transformative work within the work on AO3, to comply with TOS. This might be an excerpt, a transcript, some or all of linked images, accompanying imagery, or screenshots of the work. You can read more about AO3's TOS here:

Medium updates!

Collage rules clarification

Medium: Collage now has this clarification: Elements used must be creative commons, professionally published and available online, permission obtained, or drawn directly from canon.

New mediums!

We've had some new mediums nominated by creators excited to make them! Please consider adding these to your requests:

  • Medium: Clue and/or Logic Based Puzzles
  • Medium: Photomanip
  • Medium: Gifset
  • Medium: Original Music
Click here to view the wordcount equivalent rules for the above mediums.

Medium: Clue and/or Logic Based Puzzles

  • Puzzles which use clues and/or grids to identify associations between words.
  • The majority of clues in the puzzle must be related to a requested tag, parts of the canon the requested tag is from, or a connected story set up by the puzzle framing (e.g. a narrative included with the puzzle).
  • For all puzzles, any non-clue story provided along with them will count as wordcount in addition to the base puzzle equivalent.
  • Puzzle types and base equivalents:
    • Logic Puzzle - Minimum 3 categories, equivalent to 2k
    • Murdle - Minimum 3 categories, equivalent to 2k
    • Raddle - Minimum 10 steps (including first and last), equivalent to 1k
  • If you would like to make a type of puzzle not listed above, please contact the mods prior to making it so we can determine an equivalent (Any puzzles added after signups close will require an opt-in from the recipient).

Medium: Photomanip

  • Using pre-existing images and photographs to digitally create a new composition.
  • One finished photomanip is equivalent to 1k.
  • It must be reasonably clear from the manip which of your recip's requested tags you are filling.
  • Elements used in a manip must be creative commons, professionally published and available online, permission obtained, or drawn directly from canon.

Medium: Gifset

  • Animated graphic(s) (of video and/or images) which tell a story or AU, make an argument, highlight a theme, highlight a parallel, or are otherwise transformative and non-ephemeral.
  • Each gif in a gifset will be equivalent to 150 words
  • Elements used in a gifset must be creative commons, professionally published and available online, permission obtained, or drawn directly from canon.

Medium: Original Music

  • Sheet music or audio recording for an original composition or song in response to prompt.
  • 20 seconds of recorded or transcribed music is equivalent to 1k.
  • If posting sheet music without audio, please list the estimated time to play in the top author's note.
  • Sheet music can be in a downloadable image form or Musescore file, audio recording should be an MP3.

The above mediums and their rulesets have also been added to the "Wordcount Equivalent" section of the rules post.

Please add these mediums to your requests if you want them! There are creators out there who really want to make this stuff.

[personal profile] aat_mod

Hooray, it's time to start putting our requests into the Main Collection and, for those of you with lots of requests to make, the Request Overflow Collection!

Requesting Reminders

  • Requesting in AAT doesn't obligate you to create anything—you can skip bidding if it doesn't interest you. However, creating at least 500 words of stuff for someone else is part of the requirements for pinch hits.
  • Requesting at least 3 fandoms with distinct lore is also a requirement to be pinch hit. You can add fandoms to your requests if you're sent out as a pinch hit in June.
  • You're allowed to sock up for this event (request with two or more accounts) but you must sock responsibly.
    • Even for people who create a lot of gifts for this event, we only want to guarantee one gift per person, not per account.
    • You must have different requests on each account you sign up with—you can have the same optional details/freeform tags/DNWs, but you need to request different fandoms/relationship slot tags/character slot tags.
    • We expect you to reach out and let us know that your sock(s) don't need to go to pinch hit in June if you've received 500 words of gifts or more on at least one account. (If you've socked up with an account you don't want to connect to your main even in an email to us, that's fine! Just use your sock's email to opt out of pinch hits. We will feel warm and fuzzy about you socking responsibly and not care what your main account actually is, as that's none of our business.)
  • There are more reminders in the sign up form about the specific contents of your requests. Please read those too!

Nominations are ongoing!

Nominations, including medium nominations, end on May 9th, 10:00pm EDT. This is 24 hours before sign ups close. We will not add late nominations.

Also, nominate ahead of when you want to submit requests! Our nominations mod will process nominations as fast/often as possible, and the rest of us will help if asked, but tragically sleep and eating and such are necessary.

Medium updates!

Podfic equivalent clarification

We've added the following update to the podfic medium equivalent rules: If any decimals result from [us doing math to convert time to wordcount], we will round the equivalent for that podfic up to the nearest word.

(This was always the case, we just realized we should say so explicitly so podficcers would know how their wordcount is being calculated!)

New mediums!

We've had some new mediums nominated by creators excited to make them! Please consider adding these to your requests:

  • Medium: Interactive Fiction
  • Medium: Fanvids
  • Medium: Collage (includes webweaves!)
  • Medium: Poetry (includes filk!)
  • Medium: Typeset of a Recipient's Fanfiction
Click here to view the wordcount equivalent rules for the above mediums.

Medium: Interactive Fiction

  • A gamified narrative in which players choose one of multiple options to influence how the story goes and ends. It may or may not have visual elements.
  • The following will be used to calculate wordcount:
    • All unrepeated text is counted as the total wordcount.
    • For works between 1k and 5k, a 500 word credit for coding work is added. For works of over 5k, a 1k credit for coding work is added.
    • Visual elements will match the individual visual medium's wordcount equivalents.

Medium: Fanvids

  • Clips or images from a fandom edited to a song.
  • Will be calculated as: 30 seconds of vid are equivalent to 1,000 words.
  • If any decimals result from the math, we will round the equivalent for that fanvid up to the nearest word.

Medium: Collage

  • A collage of existing images, edited so that the juxtaposition of elements creates meaning.
  • Each element of the collage will be equivalent to 150 words.
  • Each element must be clearly sourced.

Medium: Poetry

  • Text written in metric and/or rhyming verse
  • 12 lines is equivalent to 1,000 words.
  • If any decimals result from the math for a single poem's equivalent, we will round the equivalent for that poem up to the nearest word.

Medium: Typeset of a Recipient's Fanfiction

  • Designing a layout of one (or more) pre-existing fic to make it look like a real book. An ebook or a file easy to print and bind by hand as a book or booklet.
  • The following will be used to calculate wordcount:
    • 300 per 1k of original fic
    • 1k for illustrated front cover
    • 500 for half page illustration
    • 250 for quarter page illustration
    • 100 for two unique drawn scene dividers
  • If the recipient opts into manips, manips will be allowed for any of the above visual elements with the same equivalent.

The above mediums and their rulesets have also been added to the "Wordcount Equivalent" section of the rules post.

We'll post another new mediums round up on May 9th, when medium nominations close.

tagset cleanup

This post is to report issues with tags already in the tagset.

Your report must include

  • The tag(s)
  • The fandom
  • The issue and if necessary what needs to be changed to fix it.

Things to definitely report:

  • Misspellings: Please tell us the correct spelling.
  • Synning catastrophes: Sometimes a tag, or even a whole fandom, is synned to another thing in the tagset which then devours it. Make sure to tell us both the devoured tag/fandom and what is consuming it.
  • Wandering tags: These are tags that belong in one tagset fandom, but are showing up in others. This is usually caused by the fandoms being connected, but some tags just like to show up any ol place. Please indicate both the correct fandom and the fandom(s) being invaded.
  • Mod whoopses: Did we say to do things one way and then went and accepted it the wrong way? Hopefully this won't happen often, but if it does please report it here!

Things we may or may not fix but you can report:

  • Confusing tags: Are you just not sure what a tag means? We might not be able to fix it, but we'd like to know.

Things you don't need to report:

  • Weird spaces or other formatting issues that don't affect the tag contents
  • Double Disambiguation: May be used to make a tag stay put.
  • Duplicate tags
  • Tones/diacritics
  • Crossover tags with ambiguous or AMT fandoms
  • Anything in the "Unassociated Characters & Relationships" bucket at the bottom.

Nomination Requirements:

  • Only nominate mediums which you wish to create.
  • It must be broad and cannot fall under any of the above mediums. If two similar mediums are nominated, they will be combined. Specific subsets of mediums should be nominated as non-binding freeforms.
    • For example you may nominate "Interactive Fiction" as a broad category, and any specific styles of interactive fiction should instead be optional details nominated as freeforms or listed in the optional details box.
  • Styles may not be nominated unless it is a style of visual media which can be made equivalent to a small amount, similarly to "Macaroni" or "Stick Figure". Any styles nominated for this purpose must be instantly recognizable to mods.
  • You may nominate specific subcategories of Fanart, however these will be limited and should only be nominated if they provide a lower-than-1k option for bidding. These should be broader categories that aren't already covered by those above (For example "Hats" wouldn't be accepted, because "Single Accessory/Clothing Item" includes hats)
  • All mediums nominated must be possible to post on their own as complete gifts.

How to Nominate:

  • Please reply to this post with the following information:

Welcome to the Festival of Very Short Canons! All of April I'll be posting two recs a day in the comment section of this post.

All recommended canons will take 45 minutes or less to consume—many of them much less! We have a mixture of music/music videos, short stories, fake articles, comics, and miscellaneous other things. (Music and music videos were so popular that we're going to have about one of those a day every day of April!)

Extra info:

  • Have a longer canon you'd love to rec? Stop by the Canon Promo post!
  • If you have a Dreamwidth account, you can subscribe to comments on this post to get email updates.
  • The recommendation form asked reccers if they'd like to give any content warnings, but it was optional; recommended canons won't necessarily have comprehensive warnings.
  • Please don't make top-level comments to this post, but you're welcome to discuss recc'd canons by replying to my comments! You can also join the AAT Event Discord.

We had a lot of recs for the Festival of Very Short Canons, but of course lots of us have canons longer than 45 minutes that we'd like to recomment! This is a post for doing that—you can promote any canon that you'd like to request or offer for AAT and let us know why it's great and why we should consider consuming it and requesting or creating for it!

What to put in your promo

  • Fandom name: Also make this the title of your comment below. If you're promoing a certain ship or section of your fandom, include it after your fandom name.
  • Media type: What kind of thing is it?
  • Length: How long does it take to consume the canon?
  • Where can it be found? (Only legal links for this, please.)
  • What is it/what is it about?
  • What do you love about it? Also, what are you planning to request for it?/What do you want to create for it?
  • If it's a big/complex/long/scattered fandom, where should people start? Also, are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfill your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?
  • Do you have any content warnings? These are at your discretion and don't need to be comprehensive. Some content "warnings" might also help attract people who deliberately look for that kind of thing!

How to post your promo

Comment on this post by clicking "reply" in the bottom right corner. You do not need a Dreamwidth account to post.

Put your fandom's name as the comment's title.

Copy the code in the text box below and fill it out. Fields can be removed if you don't need them/aren't interested in filling them out.

Schedule, Event Overview, and Rules

Are you ready for the Auctions, As Threatened?

Unlike some other, weaker events where participants are handed an assignment just because they signed up, AAT is different! This event is all auctions, all the time.

To participate in the event you can:

  • Request gifts in 1-20 fandom(s)!
  • Join us on Discord to bid on the recipient(s) you'd like to create for!
  • Win big!! Or maybe lose everything!!!

Posting a gift without winning an auction for your recipient is illegal, though we haven't found any way to stop it from happening again and again.

Other info:

  • Because submitting requests isn't directly linked to receiving an assignment, you're not obligated to do both. Participants who only want to request or only want to create are very welcome!
  • Requests and fills will be on AO3; auctions will take place on an event-specific discord server
  • Format requests for this event like you would a regular exchange, with likes, prompts, and DNWs.
  • To receive an assignment, bid on and win a recipient! Otherwise, you will be forced to resort to crimes(tm).
  • Auctioned requests will be public, and winners will be public. There is no anonymity/anon period for this event.
  • The Event Overview section below outlines the basic stages of AAT.
  • The Rules section below explains the specific requirements and expectations for participation in AAT. Please read this section carefully even if you participate in a lot of multifandom events and/or participated in the 2020 We Die Like Fen auction round.

Rules )

Festival of Very Short Canons

Worried you won't have enough fandoms in common with other participants? Because the only way to legally post a work to the AAT collection is to win an auction, we'll all have an easier time if we have more fandoms in common—more people to bid on! more people to bid on us! To facilitate this, we're going to have a little festival for very short (under 45 minutes) canons in April. Every day in April, I'll share two very short canons recommended by AAT participants!

View short canon recs here.

Other Info

  • Closer to the event there will be more information provided about event logistics (nominations, requesting, bidding, crimes, etc) but that's still a work in progress at this point. I thought people would appreciate being able to see what's in this post ASAP so they can decide if they want to participate, lure in friends, and possibly schedule around things.
  • If you have questions you can ask them in a reply to this post; anonymous commenting is on so you don't need a Dreamwidth account. (You can try asking on Discord, but your question might get lost or might not have an answer yet, so commenting here is the best choice!)
  • Reminder to consider joining the Discord server which we will be using for auctions!

From roughly late April 2025 through June 2025 I will be running an event based on the auction round of We Die Like Fen. We'll bid with wordcount (or wordcount equivalent, because art and other mediums will be allowed!) to get our assignments. The WDLF auction round in 2020 was a ton of fun and we produced a crazy amount of stuff. I'm excited to do it again, but this time with planning and hopefully less suffering on the mod side.

Additional event information:

  • fic, art/comics, podfic, and fanmixes will definitely be included. additional mediums can be nominated by people interested in creating those mediums (to give them stuff to bid on!) the creation period will be about five weeks
  • auctions will take place in a discord server
  • auctions and winners will be public; there will be no anonymity for this event
  • posting gifts without winning an auction for the recip will be illegal, but not against the event rules
  • participants will be able to use the discord server to participate in organized crime (colluding with other participants to bid as a team on auctions) and enact wordcount laundering schemes (winning an auction to retroactively legitimize an illegal treat)

Join the discord here!

(This server will be the event server! It will be a few months until we start to use it for actually talking to each other, but now that we have an event name (thank you, everyone who voted!) I figured I would make it so that I can start collecting victims participants! You can of course just follow the comm or wait for a [community profile] fandomcalendar post instead.)
