Welcome to the Festival of Very Short Canons! All of April I'll be posting two recs a day in the comment section of this post.
All recommended canons will take 45 minutes or less to consume—many of them much less! We have a mixture of music/music videos, short stories, fake articles, comics, and miscellaneous other things. (Music and music videos were so popular that we're going to have about one of those a day every day of April!)
Extra info:
- Have a longer canon you'd love to rec? Stop by the Canon Promo post!
- If you have a Dreamwidth account, you can subscribe to comments on this post to get email updates.
- The recommendation form asked reccers if they'd like to give any content warnings, but it was optional; recommended canons won't necessarily have comprehensive warnings.
- Please don't make top-level comments to this post, but you're welcome to discuss recc'd canons by replying to my comments! You can also join the AAT Event Discord.
April 21 - Cabinet Man - Lemon Demon, Sandkings - George R. R. Martin
21 April 2025 03:39 pm (UTC)Cabinet Man - Lemon Demon
(Reccommended by .oceangirl!)
Media type: Song
Approximate length: 0-10 minutes
Content Warnings body horror and some violence
A scientist turns himself into an arcane machine, and runs a very successful (and insanity inducing) game.
Sandkings - George R. R. Martin
(Reccommended by Anonymous!)
Media type: Short story
Approximate length: 11-30 minutes
Content Warnings Animal cruelty and death is a part of the story though the guy causing most of it gets a deserved and satisfying comeuppance
Simon Kress, a rich, entitled, cruel asshole, acquires exotic alien pets and badly mistreats them. Karma comes back around for him soon enough and the titular sand kings get their own back. I love the horrific, unsettling psychic bonds portrayed in this story, the life cycle of the alien pets (and what we learn about them in the end!), and the implicit but unexplored between the pet shop owners that sell Simon the sandkings in the first place. Long story short, they are a human+nonhuman partnership that clearly are psychically linked and I specifically would be curious about their backstory, how they met, what their dynamic is like as partners and friends, fic shipping them, fic with an ambiguous relationship they don't care to define...
